Internship Opportunities

In 1991, the USGA established the P.J. Boatwright, Jr. Internship Program. The program is designed to give experience to individuals who are interested in pursuing a career in golf administration through state and regional golf associations, as well as other non-profit organizations dedicated to the promotion of amateur golf, on a short-term, entry level basis.

The Mississippi Golf Association is seeking an aggressive individual that can take an assignment and see it through with minimal supervision. This internship will provide a hands-on learning experience for any qualified person wanting to increase their knowledge of golf administration.

Description Working with the Executive Director and staff on the day to day operations of the state golf association. The Mississippi Golf Association conducts an active amateur tournament season and interns assist with the overall administration of these tournaments. The majority of time is spent seeing the fulfillment of the tournament season. The remaining time is in typical office administration duties.

Primary Responsibilities Establishing entry criteria for specific events; accepting, processing entries and filling the field for each tournament; making visits to tournament sites; being on-site during the event to assist with starting, scoring, pairings, and various areas of tournament administration; assist in tournament setup both on the course and through the Tournament Pairing Program, BlueGolf; become familiar with and assist in USGA Course and Slope Ratings; calculating and updating the MGA points system following the completion of each tournament. Working with the Mississippi Junior Golf Association staff to assist in tournament operations and further the established junior golf tour in Mississippi. The MJGA schedules a full season of junior championships and sanctioned events at which an intern is present to carry out the typical tournament operation responsibilities. The majority of time is spent seeing the fulfillment of the junior tournament season. Being on-site during events to assist with starting, scoring, pairings and various areas of tournament administration; communicate with junior members via monthly email newsletters and over the phone; write articles following tournaments and periodically throughout the internship; assist in all tournament operations; prepare and assist in tournament setup both on the course and through the Tournament Pairing Program, BlueGolf; process tournament entries.

Training The Association will provide training in course marking and setup for tournament competition. Also in the Rules of Golf and the Tournament Pairing Program that is used extensively at championships. Training in USGA Course and Slope Ratings will be included when necessary.
