The Mississippi Golf Association has established a yearly "Points Series" which later determine Player of the Year awards for both the regular and senior division. These awards are presented annually to the players that collect the highest point total throughout the calendar year in their particular division. In order to earn points towards the senior division a player must be 50 years old on or before the first day of any given event. In order to earn points toward the super senior division a player must be 60 years old on or before the first day of any given event.
In addition, the Points Series is used to determine the invitees to participate in MGA-selected team events, such as the Governor's Cup Matches, USGA State Team Championship and the MS Cup Matches.
The points series will begin with the Bryan Cup as the first sanctioned tournament and end on October 31st. Any other sanctioned event after October 31st will count towards the next year's points series. The 2016 Bryan Cup will count toward the 2017 Player of the Year, Senior Player of the Year and Super Senior Player points series.
The 2017 Governors Cup Team will consist of 20 players. The team will be 10 mid amateur players, 8 seniors, and 2 super seniors. The players are invited based on the following: the top 9 mid am players on the points list and a captains pick; the top 7 senior players on the points list and a captains pick; and the super senior players will be the previous year's Super Senior Amateur Champion and a captain's pick.
The 2017 MS Cup Team will consist of 12 players. This amateur team will be comprised of 10 mid am players and 2 senior players. The top two seniors from 2015 Senior Player of the Year points will be invited to play in the matches.
